Leibniz-Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei im Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V.

The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) is the largest limnological research institute in Germany (45 scientists, 40 PhD candidates). IGB is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB), a central unit providing key administrative advice and support for IGB and seven other member institutions. The IGB is the leading centre for research on freshwater ecosystems in Germany.

Our mission is to understand and describe the structures, processes and functions within aquatic ecosystems, their relevance for ecological states as well as their dependence on natural factors and anthropogenic stressors.

Based on that knowledge we develop new concepts for the sustainable water management of our rivers and lakes. We consider it to be a fundamental responsibility to educate young scientists and to provide scientific advice to politicians, economists and the public.

Scientists involved in BioFresh:

Klement Tockner

Klement Tockner

Klement Tockner (Professor, PhD, m) is Director of IGB, full Professor for Aquatic Ecology at the Freie University Berlin, Titular Professor at ETH Zürich, and Adjunct Senior Scientist at EAWAG (CH). He has special expertise on freshwater biodiversity and ecology. He has published more than 130 scientific papers including 60+ ISI papers. Klement Tockner has successfully managed large inter- and transdisciplinary projects (e.g. Tagliamento project, European Catchment Data Base). He was WP leader of the EU-project tempQsim, he is involved in the current project MIRAGE, and he is the coordinator of FloodPlainEvolution, a MarieCurie International Incoming Fellowship.

Rita Adrian

Rita Adrian

Rita Adrian (PhD, f) is a freshwater ecologist at IGB. She has special expertise in long-term ecological research, ecosystem functioning and the impact of climate warming on aquatic ecosystems. Rita Adrian has initiated a DFG (German Science Foundation) Priority Program on climate-induced changes in aquatic ecosystems (AQUASHIFT). She has successfully managed scientific projects and has been a member in two EU-projects (REFLECT, CLIME).

Michael T. Monaghan

Michael T. Monaghan

Michael T. Monaghan (PhD, m) is an evolutionary biologist at IGB and an internationally recognized expert in freshwater biodiversity. He uses molecular genetics data and techniques to solve problems in biodiversity, including the analysis of DNA using speciation-coalescence models to accelerate species discovery in poorly known faunas.

Nike Sommerwerk

Nike Sommerwerk

Nike Sommerwerk is a PhD student at IGB responsible for the "European catchment database on freshwater biodiversity". In her thesis she uses GIS and statistical methods to analyse patterns and determinants of freshwater biodiversity distribution in Europe.

Judith Dannowski

Judith Dannowski

Judith Dannowski is a PhD student in the group of Rita Adrian. Her research focusses on the effects of biodiversity and functional diversity on ecosystem functioning. She analyses long-term data sets of phytoplankton communities in lakes that differ in size and trophic states.
