Deliverables
Deliverable D1.1: Freshwater data portal enabling querying of freshwater biodiversity data
WP1 (lead RBINS) is in charge of the creation of the BioFresh biodiversity data portal. This web-based science portal will be designed for providing users free and universal access to information on freshwater biodiversity, contained in a distributed network of interoperable databases. The data portal will integrate tools for web-based geospatial visualisation and analysis tools (incl. predictive models developed in the science workpackages) and will contribute to the development of a collaborative, global infrastructure for biodiversity assessment. As such, we will enable water managers to incorporate biodiversity science into effective conservation strategy, environmental management or related policy instruments.

Deliverable D1.2: Tools for visualisation of biodiversity data retrieved through the data portal, against dedicated GIS layers
WP1 (lead RBINS) is in charge of the creation of the BioFresh biodiversity data portal, designed for providing users free and universal access to information on freshwater biodiversity. A first (beta) version of this portal, with basic functionality, was launched mid August and moved to the data subdomain (http://data.freshwaterbiodiversity.eu/) of the BioFresh website in September. In order to make the portal useful for scientists and water managers, we need to extend the database and further develop the mapping tools for visualizing the occurrence data. This report details this progress and reflects the version of the data portal launched on 28/03/2011.
Deliverable 2.3: Data Usage Agreement
In this deliverable are the draft data sharing and usage agreement for BioFresh.
The nature of the Data usage Agreement has been discussed profoundly since M9, date of the delivery of it. During the annual meeting in Monserrat, Spain (February, 21-24 2011) the executive board decided to join the Society for the Management of Electronic Biodiversity Data (SMEBD; www.smebd.eu). This will allow us to rely on SMEBD to resolve any pending intellectual property rights concerns. Currently, the process of joining SMEBD is ongoing and this agreement will be reviewed in collaboration with SMEBD later this year.
Deliverable D8.5: Production of Newsletters about the BioFresh Data Portal
Goal of Deliverable D8.5 is the production of newsletters about the BioFresh Data portal. The first Biofresh-newsletter was published 9th of August 2010. Main themes of the newsletter are the Kick-off meeting in Berlin and impressions about it, report on BioFresh data portal and metadatabase, news about the workshop in Toulouse and the upcoming workshop in Barcelona. Also about BioFresh in Russia, Biodiversity and water, Biodiversity trend analysis and finally an article about species identification by DNA barcoding.
Deliverable D8.8: Production of series of short “Youtube”style videos for web-dissemination
Short, online digital videos and animations offer numerous possibilities for communicating scientific information in a clear, accessible and user-friendly manner, to help raise the profile of freshwater issues amongst decision makers and the general public. Such short videos, uploaded to the internet via YouTube and/or Vimeo, can translate the aims and objectives of the BioFresh project and wider issues of freshwater science into understandable – but not oversimplified – information which can be understood and acted upon by the public and policy makers.
The first, four-minute animation (http://vimeo.com/19329382), gives a short overview of the key issues surrounding freshwater biodiversity conservation, and outlines how BioFresh will address some of them. The animation proved particularly successful at illustrating the potentially complex freshwater science-policy dialogue within the European Union.
